How do you share the stories behind your brand and jewellery? What kind of storytelling will enthrall and move your audience? Do different platforms require different approaches? Can you share too much or too little?
If you are considering how to best tell the story of your work and your business, you are likely to be asking yourself some of these questions. Storytelling is a fundamental aspect of brand building, allowing brands who do it best to create vibrant communities and authentic messaging. At this online Creative Links event, join writer and strategist Siobhan Maher of Authology Studio in conversation with jewellers and business owners Emma Brankin of Bauble Magpie and Susannah King of Susannah King London. They will grapple with the 'hows and whys' of best practice in storytelling, and share the magic they’ve created with stories.
At the beginning of the event there will be the opportunity to network and talk to peers, and at the conclusion of the in-conversation Siobhan, Emma and Susannah will be pleased to answer your questions.
FAQs
The Goldsmiths’ Centre’s monthly Creative Links events, designed for emerging makers and creative start-ups, provoke thoughts and questions which will enable you to reflect on where you are and how to get to where you want to be. Build your network, create links, learn to grow your business and become part of the community.
Details of our upcoming events and topics covered are listed in our What’s On. Every other month the event will be hosted online, should you not be able to attend an in-person event.
Our Creative Links talks and networking events aim to link emerging makers with each other, whilst exploring key topics essential to nurturing business success. We run our events in person at the Goldsmiths’ Centre and across the UK with a range of partners, and every other month our events take place online, so that as many of our community as possible can exchange ideas, learn from industry experts, and form valuable connections. We do not record or broadcast our events to encourage the open sharing of ideas and experiences. Popular topics will be repeated over time, so online and in-person participations can both engage in them.
Who are the speakers?
Siobhan Maher is a strategist and writer at Authology Studio, specialising in product and brand storytelling for independent jewellery businesses worldwide.
With over fifteen years experience in jewellery, Siobhan knows the magic of our industry from the inside. Bench and design trained at the Birmingham School of Jewellery, as a designer she was recognised with multiple awards, including being a Retail Jeweller 30-under-30 and two-time Professional Jeweller Hot 100 alumni. Her work is based on a belief that jewellery is different: no other industry is as emotive, creative, or totemic as ours.
Siobhan's career in jewellery followed a degree in English Literature and work in copywriting. With storytelling integral to her approach from the beginning, during a decade as a white-label fine jewellery designer she established a reputation for her distinctive marketing concepts, whether designing for the high street or Bond Street.
Authology Studio launched in 2019. As well as her own podcast, Siobhan makes guest speaker appearances for masterclasses, podcasts, and talks, including New York Jewelry Week.
Emma Brankin is the founder and owner of jewellery brand Bauble Magpie, known for a modern reimagining of antique seals and intaglios.
Makes ‘life wisdoms for real people’, Emma’s distinctive designs interpret the symbolism and message of each original seal and allow its new wearer to imbue it with their own meaning. Granting her intaglios both a fresh aesthetic and story, Emma brings a new relevance to these antique treasures. Through her seals and storytelling, Emma enjoys exploring the human condition, often espousing that "ain’t too much changed". She is inspired by her belief that, despite the passage of the centuries, enduring emotions and experiences hold the same power - from love and loss to loyalty and friendship, even our love for our pets.
In 2023 Bauble Magpie was a finalist in the ‘Start Up’ category of the Barclays Entrepreneur of the Year Awards and Emma was named as one of the Top 100 Women Entrepreneurs by Global Woman Magazine.
Prior to founding Bauble Magpie Emma was a litigator for 20 years, with a niche specialism in Healthcare Regulatory & Ethics. She much prefers being a jeweller…!
Susannah King is the founder of Susannah King London, a modern fine jewellery brand with a reputation for bold colour and powerful, tactile forms. Crafting one-of-a-kind and bespoke pieces, Susannah has a mission to encourage individuality and self expression within the jewellery industry.
A fourth generation goldsmith, Susannah blends her own inspiration of her mother’s work in gemmology with her father’s skill as a master goldsmith. Her distinctive art jewellery promises to ‘decorate you differently’, utilising an unapologetically bright vibrant palette of coloured gemstones.
Given her family history, Susannah’s entry into the world of jewellery was perhaps preordained. But after studying the skill of goldsmithing, Susannah explored bringing her own original perspective to the craft. Showing a small collection of work at London Fashion Week 2019, her designs were so well-received she soon launched her own brand. Susannah has worked internationally and been recognised by names such as Paul Smith and Farfetch.
Featured in Vogue and Forbes, Susannah King London was shortlisted for the Young Designer of the Year in the Professional Jeweller Awards, and partnered with National Film Awards to sponsor ‘Best Supporting Actress’ category.
