In the last 100 years, the way we use and live with designer silver has drastically changed. Whether a luxury brought out to decorate tables on best occasions, a gift to mark a significant achievement, or a spectacular sculptural piece of art, silver design has had to stay relevant to our changing lives.
In this Creative Inspiration Workshop, join the Goldsmiths’ Company’s curators and librarians at Goldsmiths’ Hall to discover the story of British silver’s most recent century through an exhibition tour and a workshop presenting original designs by silversmiths including Durbin, Benney, Styles, Devlin, Cork and Hanid alongside archival documents. After a tour of the Goldsmiths’ Company exhibition Taking Shape: 100 Years of Company and Craft, you’ll be guided to the Goldsmiths’ Company Library to see, handle, photograph and draw a range of unique archival material that paints a new picture of designer silver.
Taking Shape: 100 Years of Company and Craft reflects on the past hundred years of silver design through a series of iconic pieces from the Goldsmiths’ Company Collection. From Arts and Crafts to Art Deco, from Mid-Century Modern to twenty-first century contemporary, this exhibition traces key moments in modern silversmithing and the Goldsmiths’ Company’s changing role within them.
