Join jeweller, teacher and enamel artist, Linda Connelly, in an online talk exploring the colourful world of two extraordinary enamelling techniques, Cloisonné and Basse-Taille. Rooted in history and fine craftsmanship, these techniques continue to be utilised by contemporary makers today to achieve expressive, colourful and intricate designs across jewellery and sculptural metal work.
You will learn about the technical processes behind Cloisonné, a traditional method where thin wires are used to outline and separate vibrant layers of enamel and Basse-Taille, a technique where the metal surface is engraved, chased or carved in varying depths of low relief, that is then covered by translucent enamel to reveal the design. Linda will introduce an overview of the materials, setup, and steps involved in these techniques. Discover the conception and development of her award-winning enamel works for The Goldsmiths' Craft & Design Council (GC&DC) Awards and find out about her upcoming Cloisonné short course at the Goldsmiths’ Centre.

We run our events in person at the Goldsmiths’ Centre and online, so that as many of our community as possible can exchange ideas, learn from industry experts, and form valuable connections across the UK. We do not record these events, or broadcast them, to encourage the open sharing of ideas and experiences and preserve confidentiality. Popular topics will be repeated over time.
Techniques in Focus talks are a series of events that delve into specific jewellery-making techniques, offering insights into their history, application, and relevance in contemporary practice. These Goldsmiths’ Centre talks are designed for jewellers, silversmiths, and enthusiasts keen on deepening their technical knowledge and appreciation of the craft.
