How have medals been used to illustrate important moments in the development of public transport in London? Discover the role medals play as an integral part of the London Transport Museum’s permanent displays and hear how significant events, anniversaries and technological innovations have been commemorated by medals, coins and badges.
London Transport Museum (LTM) tells the story of London’s transport history from 1800 to the present day. Join one of the Museum’s curators, Henry Flynn, in a talk exploring a number of transport-related medals, highlighting different themes and periods of history as well as their connection to LTM’s wider collection. Find out how these beautifully designed objects can tell big transport stories.
This event is held in collaboration with the British Art Medal Society (BAMS) and is supported by the Goldsmiths’ Centre. BAMS, a registered charity, was founded in 1982 to promote the art of the medal through commissions, exhibitions, publications and events. Their latest publication, ‘Making Modern Art Medals’ is available to purchase in our online shop.

FAQs:
We run our events in person at the Goldsmiths’ Centre and online, so that as many of our community as possible can exchange ideas, learn from industry experts, and form valuable connections across the UK. We do not record these events, or broadcast them, to encourage the open sharing of ideas and experiences and preserve confidentiality. Popular topics will be repeated over time.
We are committed to making our training programmes and events as inclusive and accessible as possible. If you have any access requirements, please inform us as early as possible and we will do our utmost to so we can make the reasonable adjustments. While we will do our best to accommodate your needs, advance notice is essential to ensure we can provide appropriate support.

Who is the speaker?

Henry Flynn, Curator, London Transport Museum, has a background in Classics and Ancient History, and his museum career began at National Museums Liverpool before he moved to London to work at the British Museum. He spent most of his time there in the Department of Coins and Medals, first as an Assistant Collection Manager, and later as Project Curator for the Money and Medals Network. He worked on the Blythe House Decant Project as Project Curator: Collections Documentation, with responsibility for the Museum’s historically significant collection of plaster casts, replicas and models. He left the BM to work at London Transport Museum, initially as Senior Curator for Collections Management and now as Curator (Projects). At LTM he explores London’s transport history through documentation and spends a surprising amount of time working with decommissioned TfL signage.
