Inspired by our exhibition Inscribed: The Craft of Cutting Letters, join lettering artist Mark Brooks for a workshop exploring the foundation of script; the starting point for practising classic calligraphy and inscribing metal, wood and glass. During the evening you will have the opportunity to develop calligraphy skills, using a broad edged calligraphy pen to form beautiful letters and flowing script.

No previous experience necessary. Pens, inks and materials provided.

Who is the tutor?

Mark Brooks first picked up a broad edged calligraphy pen in 1975, aged 9, and has been fascinated by letterforms ever since. What began as a schoolboy hobby developed into a lifetimes work as a professional lettering artist working across a range of materials and methods including carved stone, pen and paper, ceramics, graphic design, digital and printmaking. Mark teaches calligraphy, and has presented lectures to calligraphy societies in London and Tokyo. His art has taken him to many places including Mexico, Russia, Monaco and Cyprus. In his early forties after completing thousands of lettering commissions, an interest in art history led Mark to study Fine Art at Canterbury Christchurch University where a new passion for painting emerged. Since then his ‘Trapezia’ series of paintings has been exhibited in Cork Street, London, The Menier Gallery SW1, and the Sidney Cooper Gallery in Canterbury, and have sold widely to collectors in the US, UK, Brazil and Hong Kong.
