Accidental connections, discussions and collaborations have been the starting point for many iconic designs, processes, materials and techniques. Created for Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW) and in celebration of the Goldsmiths’ Centre’s 5th Birthday, this installation entitled “The Serendipity Studio Installation” celebrates the effect of creative collaboration across design industries.

5 months ago, 5 design companies met and shared their specialisms, techniques and resources, only to find a number of similarities and ways that they could be part of inspiring innovation in each other’s industries. This group, which includes architects, structural engineers, a materials library, a bespoke bike designer and former jeweller, an engine turner and 3D printing studio have developed this installation as a physical representation of collaboration and serendipitous working as well as an exhibition and event programme inside.

The installation has been designed by Scale Rule, a group of architects from AKT2 and Grimshaw Architects. Inspired by a discussion with Caren Hartley about the scalable nature of the bicycle frame, bicycle tubing creates its shape. The project also saw real innovation taking place as Build with Hubs specially designed connectors, which were then 3D printed by Digits2Widgets, to join the tubes together. Materials Library SCIN, searched their catalogues to find the right materials to add, which sit within the prisms.

Enter our Serendipity Studio from 23 – 25 May to explore and be inspired by the techniques, processes and materials of other industries, and see demonstrations and listen to talks exploring the nature of design and innovation through serendipity.
