The Goldsmiths’ Company, one of the major Livery Companies of the City of London, has a long 700-year history of apprenticeships. Continuing this tradition, young people today, who wish to start a career in the goldsmithing trade, still learn their skills alongside experienced master craftspeople within a workshop.

This exhibition explores the history of apprenticeships and charts the 4-year journey of the first cohort of students on the Goldsmiths’ Centre’s Foundation Programme from the signing of their apprenticeship indentures to completing their time under the tutelage of a skilled Master and receiving their Freedom of the Goldsmiths’ Company.

Discover the stories behind the Goldsmiths’ Company Apprentices and their Masters, and delight in a selection of their “Masterpieces” – epitomising their dedication to the acquisition of outstanding skills, knowledge and an exceptional level of craftmanship.

My Master is a really passionate and inspiring person and it makes you want to craft amazing things!
