Courses

The Centre provides a range of education and training opportunities for those working or aspiring to work in the industry through the Goldsmiths' Institute. Our emphasis is on developing viable and sustainable careers within the sector and our programmes have benefitted from the inputs of many notable designers and craftspeople. We have a unique facility that is both aspirational and inclusive and which aligns perfectly with our charitable purpose.

The Goldsmiths' Institute offers three core programmes which will go 'live' over the coming months these are:

Postgraduate Professional Design Programme

Our flagship initiative led by Dr Stuart Devlin, the programme recruits up
to six postgraduates who wish to take their creativity to another level
applying this to all aspects of their careers and business aspirations. Over a
period of twelve months and through a mixture of practical design sessions,
discussion and presentations, this programme will educate, inspire and develop
a new generation of design-led creative businesses that can exploit the
opportunities presented by a fast-moving global marketplace.

Part-time & Evening Classes

Offered at full cost the Institute will be developing a range of courses for 'improvers' and those who wish to learn new skills. Course sizes are set at a maximum of 10 people and will be based upon the new City& Guilds qualifications for our sector. We expect the programme to commence in late summer/autumn 2012.

The Institute is also managing a number of initiatives on behalf of the Goldsmiths' Company including:

Getting Started - An introduction to business for jewellers and silversmiths

This is a free, week-long course held every January for recent UK graduates of precious metal courses. Delivered as a series of seminars and workshops, the programme focuses on the next steps for those wishing to pursue a career within the industry and has helped launch the careers of many established jewellers and silversmiths.

Undergraduate Summer School

Held every year in July this is a free, week-long course. It is aimed at students about to enter their final year of a degree course and is designed to widen the attendee's perceptions of the industry. It introduces the work of the Goldsmiths' Company and challenges delegates to improve their design philosophy and approach, whilst offering guidance on career paths.

The Summer School covers design practice, creativity, ideas generation, project work and case studies through discussion, exploration and sketching as well as the exchange of ideas between fellow delegates.

Application forms for the Summer School are available from May 2012

New Designers Event & Awards

Normally held at the beginning of July New Designers is the premier graduate event here in theUK. From Summer 2012 the Institute will manage the Goldsmiths' Company's sponsorship of the event and also award its prizes.

Precious Metal Bursary AWARD Scheme

The Goldsmiths' Company Precious Metal Bursary is a prestigious award which, over the past ten years, has seen many successful applicants go on to win other awards and competitions including the Goldsmiths' Craft & Design Council Award and New Designers.

The aim of the bursary is to help support undergraduates and those beginning their careers as goldsmiths whilst they undertake their final projects. The Precious Metals Bursary Award has been revised to better reflect today's cost of precious materials and, from this year, we are offering bursaries for up to a value of £1,000. It is anticipated that up to seven of these will be awarded in the
2012/13 academic year.

As well as the bursary, winners will also have the chance to be publicised at New Designers 2013 and have their finished pieces and portfolios showcased at the Goldsmiths' Centre during an industry event after the show.

This is an exciting and unique opportunity and we look forward to receiving applications that aspire to be part of this.
